I work in Security, and I am frequently asked by friends how can they protect themselves from all of the website hacks they read about. My first suggestion is always to buy 1Password and to use it to generate new passwords for every site they log into. The average internet users biggest risk is using the same email address and password to log into every site. If one site is hacked, the attackers can try that email/password combo on banking sites, shopping sites, etc. If you make proper use of 1Password, you are safe against credential re-use attacks.
